The makeover of Wadsworth Common which commenced on 2 April is almost complete. On Wednesday this week, staff from Safer Cleaner Greener, Halifax Central Initiative and 2 Environmental Health students took part in a morning’s planting with the Junior Wardens from Beech Hill Primary School
Two raised beds on the site were filled with a mixture of herb plants and fruit bushes. In addition apple, pear and plum trees were planted alongside redcurrant and gooseberry bushes on the Common to create a fruit orchard.
The final planting will be carried out tomorrow, Thursday when wildflower seeds will be scattered across the orchard areas to create a colourful vista for the summer months which will attract butterflies, bees and other insects to the area, which are vital to the ecosystem. Local residents will be invited to the official reopening event which will take place in the summer.
