Why be active?…
Taking more exercise helps to keep us fit and healthy, reducing the risk of developing a serious illness. Being active also boosts mental well being, reduces stress and improves sleep.
Regular physical activity can help prevent and manage many chronic conditions including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, as well as reducing the risk of mental illnesses like depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Other benefits include:
• Increased energy levels
• Increased self esteem and confidence
• Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight
Guidelines for Physical Activity for Adults
Aim to be active daily. Over a week, activity should add up to at least 150 minutes (2.5hours) of moderate intensity activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more. You could try 30 minutes of activity on at least 5 days a week. Moderate intensity activities will cause you to get warmer and breathe harder and your heart to beat faster, but you should still be able to carry on a conversation. Examples include brisk walking and cycling.
You should also undertake physical activity to improve muscle strength on at least two days a week. Physical activities that strengthen muscles involve using body weight or working against a resistance. Examples include exercising with weights and carrying or moving heavy loads such as groceries.
You should try to minimize the amount of time spent being sedentary (sitting) for extended periods.
