Community Iftar brings all faiths together from across Calderdale

On Thursday 7th June we held our annual community Iftar here at Queen’s Road Neighbourhood Centre. Iftar is the evening meal when Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. For Sunnis, it is at the time of the call to prayer for the evening prayer; for Shias, it is after the evening prayer.

We welcomed over 100+ residents from across central Halifax and neighbouring wards aswell as local services that we work with including the Police, St Augustine’s, local Mosque and ward Councillors.

Hafiz Amjad from our local community opened the fast with dua (the prayer) before our staff from Halifax Central Initiative served the dinner to our guests. This is our fourth community iftar and is growing each  with more community residents including families and children attending and  from various backgrounds and faiths. It provides a better understanding and appreciation for why Muslims participate in Ramadan and the meaning behind it.

On yer bike! Tour de Yorkshire comes to Halifax this Sunday…

This weekend day 4 of the Tour de Yorkshire starts in Halifax, on Sunday 6 May.
Yellow cycle race signs are now in place along the route and the streets are being dressed with yellow bikes and decorations. The busiest viewing spots in Calderdale are likely to be Cote de Hebden Bridge (King of the Mountain) and Halifax town centre. Halifax town centre will be closed to traffic from 6am on Sunday morning to allow race vehicles and cyclists to prepare for the race.

The peloton will leave the Piece Hall at 12.10pm, but please arrive early as Halifax and the route are expected to be busy. If you’re planning on watching the race in the Piece Hall you are strongly advised to use public transport and arrive early as entry is on a first come first served basis.
if you’re watching on the race route don’t forget the promotional caravan will be travelling the route prior to the cyclists arriving. The caravan will stop at certain locations along the route with a host of promotional goodies from the official race partners.

There are lots of celebratory community events taking place throughout the weekend.
There is a fab day of entertainment planned at the Piece Hall before and after the race see the Piece Hall website for more info. Broad Street Plaza in Halifax will be having entertainment and a big screen for visitors to continue festivities throughout the day.
