River Calder Clean Up

On Saturday 14 October Halifax Community wardens Jonny Cato and Zameer Akhtar joined Halifax Canoe Club and Calder Future volunteers for a community river clean up in Sowerby Bridge.

Following a week of rain we were lucky to enjoy a sunny morning picking glass and litter from the beach area and clearing all manner of rubbish from the wooded areas. As well as the danger to local wildlife this kind of rubbish can cause a real risk to canoeists and kayakers.

Finishing up with a well-earned brew and a biscuit in the club house, Jonny and Zameer had a good look at the boats and expressed an interest in the winter pool sessions now available for booking! Keep an eye out for their Calderdale Council high vis jackets sailing by!

Halifax Canoe Club winter pool sessions are available from October 2017 to March 2018 and are suitable for beginners learning to paddle and for those that would like to learn to roll. Course run on Thursday evenings between 7 and 8pm and cost £35 (both adult and junior sessions) for 5 sessions – there’s a £5 winter membership fee for non-members.
