HALIFAX STARS – A celebration of the proud tradition of boxing clubs in Calderdale
verd de gris arts’ have been awarded funding through Historic England’s Everyday Heritage Grants – to create an innovative intergenerational project with the aim of celebrating the working class culture of boxing clubs around Halifax, West Yorkshire. Halifax Stars will record the stories of older fighters, and the gyms that used to be a prominent feature of the area – as well as celebrating the importance of boxing coaching with young working class people today – the instilling of self-discipline and self-care, respect and pride in community.
The project will be cross cultural, reflecting the communal nature of boxing culture here in Halifax, but will, importantly, share this culture with a wider audience – to increase understanding of boxing’s remarkable working class legacy in the area, and champion the work that is done through the clubs to help some of the poorest and most marginalised young people in our communities.
Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England, said: “Heritage should be for everyone. I am delighted that we are able to provide funding for this project through our Everyday Heritage Grants, which will help to bring our collective and shared history back to life. These grants will enable people to tell their own stories, in their own way, and connect with others in their communities through a shared understanding of their local heritage.
He continued: “The histories of castles and great houses and their inhabitants are well documented, but we know far less about our everyday heritage. From council estates, pubs and clubs, to farms, factories and shipyards, these are the places where most people have lived, worked and played for hundreds of years. We want to explore these untold stories and celebrate the people and places at the heart of our history.”
