Upholstered seating and furniture is now subject to new storage and disposal regulations and must ONLY go into the designated skips at Halifax, Brighouse or Todmorden HWRCs. They cannot be mixed with other waste.
This type of waste can no longer be accepted at Sowerby Bridge or Elland HWRCs.
There are new regulations regarding the storage and disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). These are chemical substances that do not break down for a very long time. If waste containing POPs is not managed responsibly, there is potential for significant damage to the wider environment.
Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating includes:
– Sofas and armchairs
– Upholstered dining or office chairs
– Stools and footstools
– Bean bags
– Floor or sofa cushions.
To ensure that we store and dispose of POPs waste correctly, we have added an additional skip for the above items at Halifax, Brighouse and Todmorden Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Unfortunately, we are not able to accept the above items at Elland and Sowerby Bridge as these sites are too small for the separate POPs container needed to meet the legislative requirements.
Please ensure waste upholstered domestic seating is kept whole where possible. Any damaged parts must be contained to reduce the risk of any textile or foam escaping into the environment on transit. If in doubt, please ask a member of staff for help.
Mattresses, curtains, blinds and beds are not domestic seating and are not affected by the new regulations. They can be disposed of in the general waste skips at any HWRC.
