What’s On – Activities and Events

Net Zero Week

It’s Net Zero Week, but what is net zero and what does a net zero future mean for Calderdale? Watch this short video to find out.

You may have noticed that in the last decade, flooding in Calderdale has been worse than ever before. Worryingly, this is a pattern that is also being seen across the world as extreme weather events are on the rise. This is a direct result of climate change. Climate change is a global issue, but we all have a role to play in protecting our planet. In Calderdale, we’ve pledged to become net zero by 2038.

The good news is that tackling climate change will make life better for us and our families. Join our path to a brighter future and learn more about the climate emergency on our website.

You can also sign up for our new climate emergency e-newsletter which will provide further details and updates regarding the Climate Action Plan Consultation and launch here.

South Asian Heritage Festival

South Asian Heritage Month starts on 16 July and is a celebration of the ongoing cultural legacy of the region and the lives of the people of South Asian heritage in Britain today, many of whom live in Calderdale. It is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the long and rich history of British Asians and the positive impacts they have within our communities.

The Festival will begin with the TILAWATH recitation followed by the ADHAN (call to Mid-day prayer) by SHAYKH ABDULLAH. The programme will then lead on to a reading of nasheeds.

Followed by an array of British South Asian talent in venues including Square Chapel and Victoria Theare.

There will also be a range of stalls on the day, including: Henna painting, calligraphy arts, face- painting, antique Pakistani jewellery, handmade fabrics and bags + sweet treats like traditional corn cob sellers.

We will also be having a range of fun, family-friendly activities in The Piece Hall courtyard

Calderdale’s Museums and Library Service will also arrange a number of commemorative displays and events to complement this important local celebration, including examples of South Asian textiles and art from the Museum collection, as well as contemporary objects from people of South Asian heritage living in Calderdale. The Calderdale Library Service will hold a reminiscence workshop, where people from the South Asian community can share memories and stories. This will form the basis of new Local Studies work for the community archive.

verd de gris arts will also be running TAXI film, showcasing the stories and experiences of local SOUTH ASIAN TAXI DRIVERS the film will be available through local libraries and promoted through local taxi firms.

Tickets are FREE for ALL performances and workshops!

Calderdale COVID-19 Vaccination Programme Update

  • It’s not too late to get your first, second or booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccination – these remain available to all who are eligible, and you will be welcomed with open arms. Book an appointment or visit a walk-in clinic or call 119 for free.
  • If you still need a spring booster we strongly encourage you to book an appointment online, call 119 or find a convenient walk-in site.
  • The spring booster will give you protection against Coronavirus during summer. If you’re having a summer holiday in August, getting your spring booster before the end of June will give time for you to gain maximum protection ahead of your trip.
  • Getting a spring booster dose before the end of June will allow enough time before the next seasonal dose to extend protection over winter, and against any possible resurgence in infection levels.
  • When the time comes, the NHS will be inviting eligible people for a seasonal dose during autumn/winter. You may also be able to get your flu vaccination in the same visit.
  • Children aged 5 to 11 are still eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine and can get their second dose 12 weeks after their first. Find out more and book and appointment
  • Going abroad? Don’t forget to check your NHS COVID pass. Set up your account at least two weeks before you want to use the digital pass. You can also get the pass in other formats including letter, audio and Braille. These can take seven days to arrive. If you think your COVID pass is incorrect the national Vaccine Data Resolution team can help. Contact them by calling 119. Please note, they can take up to 10 days to resolve issues.
