This weekend! Light Up Lives for Diwali at the Piece Hall

The Piece Hall is celebrating Diwali with a daylong festival of music, food, dance and of course light on Saturday 6 November between 11am – 5pm.

The Festival of Lights is observed by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. It also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations, and marks new beginnings, the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. The Courtyard will be alive with traditional Indian music and dance, alongside vegetarian food stalls, family crafts and even a meditation session. And embracing the spirit of the festival, lantern making workshops will be held suitable for the whole family. Click here for more information and more events at the Piece Hall

Have your say on plans to improve walking and cycling in north and west Halifax
Calderdale Council is working with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to deliver improvements to walking and cycling journeys in north and west Halifax.
The proposals cover areas around Dean Clough, Lee Mount, Ovenden and Illingworth in north Halifax and on and around Gibbet Street, Queen’s Road, Hanson Lane, Parkinson Lane and the Beech Hill estate around west Halifax. A number of changes to the proposals have been made since the consultations in March and April 2021.
Features of the west Halifax proposals include:

  • Improved walking routes between Halifax town centre and Gibbet Street
  • Additional parking bays to address issues with pavement parking
  • One-way systems to reduce conflict on narrow streets and improve bus reliability
  • Turning restrictions for some vehicles on Queen’s Road to improve safety and access to local shops
  • Improvements to planting, seating areas and access to bus stops, as well as new crossing points

The updated proposals are now available and the Council would like to hear your feedback.

Feedback on proposals can be submitted until Sunday 19 December 2021. Those who do not have access to the website can contact West Yorkshire Combined Authority via Metroline on 0113 245 7676 for a printed copy of the designs and survey along with a freepost envelope.

Calderdale homeowners benefitting from Government insulation scheme

Calderdale Council is working in partnership with Eclipse Energy and Better Homes Yorkshire to deliver Phase Two of the Local Area Delivery (LAD) of the Government’s Green Homes Grant with funding from the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. The work involves fully insulating attic space, plastering and redecorating the area, installing trickle vents in the windows for air flow and, if needed providing mechanical ventilation to bathrooms, such as an extractor fan. Work can be completed within two weeks (can take longer) and households are urged to sign up before the colder months set in.

To qualify, households need to meet criteria, which includes a total combined income of less than £30,000. Canvassers have been visiting properties to explain the scheme and assess if households qualify.  Private landlords can also apply for the scheme if their tenants qualify and will have to make a contribution towards the total cost.  All work is also subject to a free, no obligation survey.

Those interested need to act fast as this limited funding is available for a short time only – properties will not be able to benefit after the sign-up target is met.
