Arakan Creative proudly presents their latest theatre production – ‘Spread by the Word’ – which is set in 7th century Mecca and Medina. This production is a UK-first and Arakan’s most ambitious play to date, charting certain Qur’anic revelations and how they impacted on the society of the time (please note it does not depict Prophet Mohammed, his family or companions – peace be upon them). There are multiple historic stories performed by a professional, multi-ethnic cast, aiming to entertain and educate.
‘Spread by the Word’ is about dispelling misunderstanding around particular Qur’anic verses that are used as a means to spread fear and hatred. Islamophobia is a growing issue and we want to go ‘right back to the beginning’ as it were, looking at the very first anti-Muslim/Islamic sentiment to emerge as soon as Mohammed (pbuh) began preaching. Many of the issues dealt with then, we still deal with today. Crucially, we address the notion that Islam was ‘spread by the sword’, which of course is not true. Real change can never spread unless the heart is willing.
You are invited to come along to our production in Halifax at the Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, 10 Square Road, Halifax HX1 1QG on Wednesday 1 May (tickets are £4 each) It is a family-friendly show, just over 1 hour long and spoken in English.
