Well let me tell you…
Not only are they yummy and fun to make (depending how well you flip them!) but they are a tradition ritual in the Christian calendar.
Shrove Tuesday is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. the date changes annually and is determined by when Easter falls.
The term Shrove come from “shrive” meaning to “confess” .In the Christian calendar, it is the day before the start of lent and is custom for christians to be “shriven”. On this day traditionally it was the last night to eat up rich, fatty foods before the ritual of fasting during the lent period.
Pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday.
So the next question is what will you be giving up for Lent?
To make your own yummy pancakes you will need:
- 225g / 8 oz plain flour or all-purpose flour
- Pinch salt
- 2 large, fresh eggs
- 600ml / 2½ cups/ milk
- 2 tsp melted butter plus melted butter for cooking
This will make approx 12 pancakes (depending how big you want them!) Use caster sugar and lemon juice to serve ( or be naughty and use chocolate or maple syrup!)
Happy Pancake Day!
