Volunteer Co-ordinator (6 month fixed term contract)
GRADE:                    £19,621(pro rata)
PRIME OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

  • To co-ordinate and develop the Museum Service’s volunteer programme
  • To help ensure that the volunteer programme follows best practice

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  To co-ordinate and develop all volunteering activity within the Museum Service.
  • To review and update existing volunteering procedures within the Museum Service, to ensure it meets best practice, supports volunteers effectively and provides a framework for monitoring, recording and developing volunteering within the service.
  • To work with the Volunteer Development Officer and Museum Manager to develop new opportunities and models for volunteering within the service, which maximise opportunities to enhance and extend the core service and increase access to collections.
  • To develop positive working relationships with all museum service volunteers and relevant members of staff, to ensure the effective integration of volunteers within the service.
  • To manage the recruitment, selection, training and development of museum service volunteers.
  • To maintain existing database and information systems for recording volunteering activity and ensure this information feeds into performance management processes.
  • To ensure that all volunteer activity meets service standards, including those for collections care, documentation and exhibitions.
  • To be an effective advocate for the Museum Service volunteer programme.
  • To carry out duties in accordance with the Council’s equality and diversity policies and practice, in terms of employment and service delivery, to ensure that colleagues and services users are treated in a fair and consistent manner, and that services are delivered with sensitivity to the needs of service users.
  • To carry out all duties and responsibilities with due regard to health & safety legislation and other relevant council policies.

KNOWLEDGE
Degree level qualification in a relevant area of study
Knowledge of museum documentation
Knowledge and understanding of current collections care standards
Experience of writing risk assessments and understanding of Health & Safety issues
Understanding of IT and its practical application in museums

SKILLS
Experience of working with volunteers within the museum or heritage sector
Practical experience of museum documentation
Practical experience of working with a wide variety of museum collections, including preventative conservation
Good verbal and written communication skills
Good interpersonal skills

INITIATIVE
Able to work on own initiative within agreed priorities

DEMANDS
Ability to manage his/her own workload

Flexible and able to work evenings and weekends when necessary
Driving licence as casual car allowance is payable
