We all know times are tough economically for people in Calderdale, many more local people are now living in poverty. The Church and Society Group of the Calderdale Methodist Circuit are planning a one-day conference entitled Poverty in Calderdale
This conference aims to help all people of all faiths or none in Calderdale to understand the problems of poverty locally and to increase our input into the lives of those in need in our community. The conference will look at what is already being done to help locally and consider what else is required
As one person told the national Methodist Conference
“Poverty is not only about shortage of money. It is about rights and relationships; about how people are treated and how they regard themselves; about powerlessness; exclusion….”
The conference will be held at the Kings Centre, Park Road, Halifax on the 6th Oct 2012 from 9.30am – 1pm with an opportunity to talk to people and services working in this area afterwards.
The conference will be hosted by Rory Deighton Chief Exec of Calderdale Citizens Advice Bureau, will include a panel question and answer session involving local politicians from all the major parties and hear personal stories from those living in poverty. The keynote speaker will be Niall Cooper from Church Action on Poverty
The event is supported by Calderdale Community Foundation, Voluntary Action Calderdale, Calderdale MBC and Calderdale’s Interfaith Council.
The conference is free and includes lunch and refreshments
