Free Diabetes Course in Halifax

Do you have Type 2 diabetes and live in Halifax?

Voluntary Action Calderdale (VAC) are running an X-PERT programme for the South Asian Community working in partnership with Calderdale CCG to provide all the information you need to manage your diabetes. This 5 week course starts Wednesday 16 May at the Resource Centre, Hall St, HX1 5AY and will be held on the 4 subsequent Wednesdays.

There are separate sessions for women and men;

    • women 10:00am-12:30pm
    • men 1:30pm-4:00pm

You have a higher risk for diabetes if you:

  • are from certain black and minority ethnic (BAME) groups
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • have Impaired glucose regulation
  • carry excess body weight (especially around the waist)
  • have low activity levels (exercising less than 3 times a week)
  • eat a diet that contains too much refined carbohydrate and processed food

Calderdale Industrial Museum Celebrates Tour de Yorkshire

Calderdale Industrial Museum will be open on both Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May to coincide with the start of the Tour de Yorkshire from the Piece Hall on Sunday 6 May, 12:10pm.

As part of the celebration, the museum will be exhibiting some antique bicycles.

Open 10:00am to 4:00pm (Last entry 3:30pm).

Admission costs £5 Adults/£4 Concessions – Accompanied Children (up to aged 16) and CIMA members go FREE.

The Big Sing at The Piece Hall

Between 1831 and 1890 thousands of local Sunday School children would come together in The Piece Hall over Whitsuntide for The Big Sing. It’s been recorded that up to 34,000 would pack the vast courtyard for this popular event and celebration of song.

On 25 May 2018 The Piece Hall Trust in partnership with Calderdale Music Trust and Music Director Sam Dunkley from Performing Arts etc. will recreate this magnificent tradition once again. The project will bring 1,000 children from over 20 Calderdale primary schools together to perform a selection of songs, a number of which have been specially commissioned and written by the schools involved. This inaugural event will mark the extraordinary heritage of The Piece Hall, bringing it to life for the participants and audience in what we hope will become a tradition.
