A FREE EVENT FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS
Date: Wednesday 22nd June 2016, Time: 1 – 3 pm, Where: Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, Square Rd Halifax HX1 1QG
Over the past 6 months arts company verd de gris has been meeting with members of the Roma community here in Calderdale. We wanted to find out more about the cultural heritage of the Roma and learn more about the customs and traditions of this historic people.
Past travails and struggles have led to a closely-knit but guarded community, but the Roma now feel ready to share some of the songs, music and stories that mean so much to them. This is a great opportunity for us all to come together in a spirit of sharing and learning … especially for our schoolchildren, many of whom are learning about the process of migration and cultural identity.
Prior to the event at Square Chapel we will be working creatively with Yr 6 children from Burnley Road Academy – sharing some of these important ideas and finding out what music and song mean to them! The children will be joining us to perform at the event in June as well as a Roma choir from Cardiff, choreographer Natalie Speake and folk musician Amy Rose Atkinson!
This event will kickstart our Year II of our element of Creative Communities (Stronger Together): a community outreach programme delivered in partnership with Square Chapel, verd de gris and Orangebox. This programme is supported with funding from the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.
